History

The Fort Shelby Hotel took its place in history in 1917 as one of Detroit’s leading hotels, offering a new standard of excellence in service and style.

Renowned Detroit architect, Albert Kahn, was engaged to design and build the hotel’s 22-story expansion in 1927. In classic Beaux-Arts style, the tower addition features cut stone, face brick and terra-cotta crowns.
The Fort Shelby Hotel was sold in 1951 to the Albert Pick Hotels Company, and became the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel. The hotel’s glamorous, classic interior was maintained until its closing in 1973. The landmark building was registered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Today, the historic design of The Fort Shelby has been returned to its original splendor. Fifty-six luxurious apartment homes include modern amenities to enhance your living experience.

The two hundred room Hilton Doubletree Hotel has a conference center with 24,000 SQ. FT. of meeting rooms, a grand ballroom, and well-appointed fitness center, restaurants, bar, and contemporary coffee cafe – all to accommodate your busy schedule.

With unsurpassed allure, The Fort Shelby Residences now offer the best of two worlds: private condominium living with deluxe hotel amenities and modern conveniences to enhance your living experience.
